My fellow dogs, do you think it's cruel that when I wear my backpack for adventures my humans put my treats in it? All I want to do is enjoy my walks, but that's hard when I smell delicious treats on my back that I can't get to. I try to get to them and end up looking like I'm chasing my tail. And we all know how that ends. Even though my humans torture me with the treats there is something cool about wearing a backpack.
Blue is my color - In a world where many of my fellow canines are dressed and carried like dolls, I like that I my backpack is stylish and functional. I feel like a dog not a dress-up doll. I thank my humans for that.
I'm a contributing member of the pack - My contributions to the pack generally include that of the boy who cries wolf with the smallest sounds, hole digger and jumper. These are contributions that my humans would prefer I didn't do. With the wearing of the backpack my role becomes that of gear carrier where I walk proudly with my head held high. Plus, my parents have enough gear of their own to carrier, especially when our little sister comes on our walks.
It is a physical workout - Have you ever seen Scrappy Doo, Scooby Doo's cousin? Well, I might be bigger then Scrappy, but my energy levels are as high as his, if not higher. So my humans look for sneaky ways to burn this energy. Wearing a full pack works me harder and gets me tired faster. Initially wear the pack empty to get use to it, then slowly have your humans add to it while ensuring the bags are well balanced.
Keeps my attention - I'll be honest here, when my humans and I take walks I'm on high alert. As much as I don't want to, nor do my humans want me to, I play the role of protector. I loose focus and go a bit crazy. It makes our walks not as relaxed and enjoyable as we all want. That's where the backpack comes in handy. Instead of protecting our pack, my attention is about wearing the backpack and ensure none of those treats escape. It creates a real mental workout for me, which also tires me out faster.
Learning to wear a backpack is a great opportunity for you and your pack to bond and become a stronger unit. Jessie and I wear the Ruffwear Approach Pack. It is great for walks and day hikes. Do you wear a backpack on your adventures? Let us know if it has similar benefits to you as it does for me and which backpack you wear. Jessie and I are always on the look out to learn and try new things.
