Product: Kurgo Wander Hammock
Tail Wags: 3.5 out of 5
A clean car is a rarity when your dog travels with you, especially if outings include your four-legged companion swimming. After an adventure to the river on a rainy day Jessie and Jackman were drenched and dirty. Nothing was going to keep the car clean. Every time they shook, dirt and water went everywhere. Fortunately a product we discovered after a long hunt, the Wander Dog Hammock, was installed in the back seat. When we returned home and pulled the hammock off to clean it, the seats were still pretty clean. It was the rest of the car that was a mess. Kurgo, a US-based company, makes the hammock, along with other products to make travelling with your dog better, easier and cleaner. While it won't keep your car 100% clean it does a fairly good job at protecting your seats from dog grime. Read what we liked about it and what type of dog we'd recommend it for.
What we like about it
Flexible - there are multiple ways to set up the hammock
- Seat cover - protects the back seat from dirt and water, while your dog rests comfortably for your journey.
- Full hammock - this allows for dogs that might slip into the foot well to nestled into the hammock.
- Centre zip - allows one side to be open so a human can share the back seat with your dog.
Easy to clean - Thanks to the waterproofing and durability it's a quick cleaning job from wiping it down with a cloth to hosing it down in those real messy situations. The hammock is machine washable, however we found spot cleaning and letting it air dry worked well.
Compatibility - the size of the hammock makes it suitable for most vehicles. We have a hatchback and it fits very well.
Barrier protection - if your dog is a chewer or digger, this may act as a barrier from your furry companion eating or ripping your seat covers. . . no guarantees ;)
Who would we recommend it to?
If your dog suffers from aquaphobia and stays clear of water, muddy tracks and rain then this is perfect for you.
If you don't mind cleaning your dirty wet dog before getting back into your car, then this will still work for you. Alternatively, if you don't mind cleaning the parts of your car not protected by the hammock then we would still recommend the hammock.
Lastly, if your dog relaxes in the back seat and doesn't try to get in the front seat with you, then this will work well for you too. For safety reasons, your dog should be harnessed in the back seat, which you can do with the hammock.

Note - during the first year we used it, one of the straps that wraps around the front head rest broke. Replacing the hammock was not a problem as the stockists, Animates, did it without any trouble.
