When looking for dog friendly accommodation in New Zealand look no further than Cottages on St Andrews in Havelock North. We caught up with owner Di Ross to ask what makes Cottages on St Andrews so dog friendly.
Why did you decide to make your place dog friendly?
Di Ross: We have a lot of return guests and many of them have become like family. As we are set on 5 acres, some of them felt free to ask if they could bring their dog to stay with them. We trialled it and it was most successful so we opened it up to all guests in the Cottages.
When we surveyed dog owners about what they look for in dog friendly accommodation, the top three images were - a home away from home, a place to exercise their dogs, and a place to clean up their dog - what makes Cottages on St Andrews dog friendly?
DR: Home away from home – the dogs are welcome to stay inside the cottages, they don’t have to stay in crates outside or in their owners vehicle etc. A place to exercise – we are set on 5 acres so there is plenty of space to exercise their dog/s on our property and we are situated on a rural dead end street so there is plenty of room to exercise their dogs off or on lead with very little traffic on the road. A place to clean up their dog – Each cottage is completely self contained, on a private setting with outside taps attached to each cottage. Another plus for us is that we have other petting animals, I.e. Alpacas, donkeys, cows, sheep etc and the dogs love sitting on the deck of their cottage while watching the other animals in the paddocks. They are welcome to interact with them too.
What are the guidelines for guests with dogs, e.g. can they be left alone?
DR: The only thing we ask is that the dogs not be allowed to get onto the lounge furniture or on any of the beds.
How do people book if they want to bring their dog? Do you need to know ahead of time if a guest is bringing their dog(s)?
DR: No it is not a requirement, but it is nice to know as we may wish to put them in another cottage away from other guests out of courtesy as not everyone likes dogs.
Is there an additional charge for guests with dogs? If, so how much?
DR: No we welcome dogs at no extra cost.
We can't thank Di enough for taking the time to answer our questions. We hope this sways you to bring your dog on your next holiday to the Hawke's Bay. Have you stayed at Cottages on St Andrews with your dog? Let us know what your experience was like so we can spread the word.
